Power Electronics research is supported by an international grouping of 53
companies with a common interest in power electronics, electric machines and
drive systems. They fund the SPEED laboratory, one of the major outputs of
which is versatile, world-beating CAD software for the design of both modern
switched reluctance and brushless DC motors, and classical induction and DC
machines. The design and development of flexible electronic controllers for
modern motors is a second major thrust of SPEED's research. Contract
research is carried out on an international front, over 70% of our activity
being with US companies and the remainder split between Europe and Japan.

Power Systems research covers a range of topics of current concern to the
Electricity Supply Industry in this country and abroad. Flexible AC
Transmission Systems (FACTS), Custom Power, Power Quality and Real-Time
Simulations are actives areas of fundamental research in the FACTS Research
Laboratory.
