The Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering is one of the largest in terms of size and funding in the UK with a Grade 5 attained in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise. The University's school of engineering is the oldest in Britain with the Regius Chair founded in 1840. The continued eminence of Glasgow as centre of excellence in engineering is recognised in the December 2004 Times Higher Education Supplement rankings with the University of Glasgow placed at 61st in the top 100 Enginering and Information Technology universities in the world, which makes us the top university in Scotland and ranked 5th in the UK.
The department has a long-established strength in physical electronics, based on our world-leading device fabrication facilities which are currently undergoing enhancement and integration into the new James Watt Nanofabrication Centre. These activities, which integrate theoretical and technological research, underpin many of our applications orientated projects in Optoelectronics, Bioelectronics, Nanoelectronics and Ultrafast Devices and Systems.
Our renowned research activities also cover the areas of Control and Intelligent Systems, Microelectronic Systems, Power Electronics and Power Systems. In particular, we are beginning to make a major impact in the emerging fields of Music Technology, Robotics and Renewable Energy technologies. |
