About This Project

Project Activities:

1. A wide-ranging comparison survey of the position of people with mobility impairments with regard to education and employment. The survey will cover Germany, Hungary, Roumania and Scotland/UK. Anonymous extracts from the survey will be used in a secure confidential database as a resource for policy-makers and disability workers.

2. A substantial online public
database containing information on legislation, examples of good practice, support schemes and information on available assistive technology.

3. A programme of training modules which will aim to improve the skills and employability of young people with mobility impairments, and also educate employers and job centre workers on disability issues.

4. Establishment of a distance learning centre for the delivery of the modules, with online discussion areas.

5. Workshops in each of the partner countries to introduce the results and pilot the new modules for evaluation by disabled people and the employer community.

Why are we doing this?

Our approach comes from the beliefs of the project partners in inclusiveness and diversity and the responsibility of society as a whole to provide opportunities and use the skills of all its citizens fully.

University of Glasgow's Involvement

Dr Marion Hersh, a lecturer in the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, has had a long interest in the technical side of assistive and enabling technologies for the disabled. She is also committed to the social and political model of disabilities and has given a number of papers on these topics at international conferences.

Dr Hersh, with her Research Assistant, Dr Nina Baker, will be working on the survey of disabled people's experiences, the Scottish/UK part of the database, and some of the training modules. They will also be organising a workshop in Scotland in 2003.
